CHOOSING A CARE HOME

Many People have to make a decision about a care home in a crisis, perhaps after a fall or illness, or the death of a career. They sometimes make the wrong choice and looking back they wished they'd had longer to look around. Choosing a care home can be difficult, as no two are alike. There are positive points such as security, being looked after, greater comfort and perhaps new friends. You may however, have to make compromises in living with other people.

Listed below are points to look for when choosing a care home. There will be other questions to ask which are personal to you, so ask about them. It may help you to make the right choice.

Can The Chaseley be reached by your family and friends to allow easy visiting.
Does the location suit your needs.
Is the home close to shops, parks, post office etc.
Does it feel warm and welcoming.
Do you like the look of the home.
Is there a lift.
Is there easy access throughout the whole of the home.
Is it too luxurious or too basic.
Is it too big or too small.
Is there easy access to outside.
Is it clean.
Single or twin room choice.
Can you bring personal things into the home.
Can you use your room any time.
How are your valuables kept safe.
Can you have your own telephone.
Can you lock your own bedroom.
Can you have a TV in your room.
Does the person in charge make you feel at home.
How were you welcomed.
Do the staff seem friendly to talk to.
Were you invited to talk privately to the residents for their feedback.
How do the staff treat the residents.
How would you be addressed.
How do you address all the staff.
What personal care is provided on the care plan.
Were you invited to see a typical care plan, assessment and any reviews in place.
How often can you have a bath, medibath, shower.
How far is the bath.
Are the clothes that people are wearing clean and smart.
Can you choose your Doctor.
What happens if you go into hospital.
Who escorts you to the doctors, optician, etc.
How much independence will you have.
Do the residents seem happy.
Do the residents seem alert.
Are residents meetings held.
What are the meals like.
Are special diets catered for.
Is there a choice of food.
Can you make drinks and snacks for yourself.
Can you make your own daily routine.
Can you make private phone calls.
Are there any restrictions on making and receiving calls.
When can people visit.
Can visitors stay overnight.
What restrictions apply to smoking.
Would you handle your own money.
Is alcohol served.
Are there any house rules for going out, time of return etc.
Can you bring your pet.
Will you be encouraged to pursue your hobbies.
Are outings arranged.
What regular activities are there.
Do the clergy visit.
Can time be spent in the home on a trial basis.
Are there any additional charges.
What happens when you become more dependent.
What would happen if the home could not cope.
What happens to your room when you go on holiday.
How do I make a complaint.
Are my needs reviewed.
Are religious needs catered for.
How often are the fees increased.
Are they payable in advance.
Is independent advice given for financial options.
What happens if it costs more than the support can pay.
Can I see the latest inspection report.
Who are the inspectors.
What is the name and address and phone number of the fund providers.
